What Makes Us Different?

Most advisory firms will tell you they put clients first. The phrase has become so common that it has lost its meaning. We prefer to describe what that commitment requires and let you judge for yourself.

Fee-Based. Transparent by Design.

Our primary compensation is an advisory fee paid directly by the client. We are not a brokerage, and we do not sell proprietary investment products. We have no revenue-sharing arrangements with fund companies or custodians. In a limited number of cases, we may earn commissions on life, disability, or long-term care insurance when that coverage is genuinely warranted by a client’s plan. Those arrangements are always disclosed. The structure of our practice is designed to keep our interests aligned with our clients, and transparency about compensation is part of that commitment.

Planning First. Always.

Many firms describe themselves as financial planners while operating primarily as investment managers. We are a planning firm. Investments are one element within a comprehensive plan, not the plan itself. Before we discuss portfolio construction, we develop a thorough understanding of where our clients are, where they intend to go, and what is required to get there.

Evidence-Based Investment Management.

We believe in owning the greatest companies in the world. The most efficient way to do that is through index strategies, which provide broad diversification, keep costs low, and maintain the tax efficiency that active trading destroys. We do not attempt to predict markets or select individual securities. We build portfolios designed to capture the returns generated by great businesses over time.

Behavioral Discipline as a Core Service.

Most investors who underperform do so not because they chose the wrong funds, but because they bought and sold at the wrong times. Market volatility, economic headlines, and news cycles trigger decisions that feel rational in the moment and prove costly over time. A well-constructed financial plan addresses this directly. When you understand your plan, trust your strategy, and have an advisor to call when markets are unsettling, you are far less likely to make the decisions that compound into real financial harm. This is one of the most underappreciated functions of comprehensive planning, and one of the most significant drivers of long-term outcomes.

Candor as a Professional Obligation.

We consider honest counsel a professional duty, not a differentiator. If a client’s spending trajectory is unsustainable, we say so. If a proposed strategy does not improve outcomes, we do not recommend it. If the right answer is a simple one, we provide the simple answer. Our clients retain us to think rigorously on their behalf, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Fiduciary Standard. At All Times.

Our advisors are CFP® practitioners or on the apprenticeship path to CFP certification. The CFP Board fiduciary standard requires that we always act in the client’s best interest, ahead of our own. Not in most circumstances. Not when it is convenient. At all times. This is the standard under which we operate, and it shapes every recommendation we make.

OUR PROCESS

Every client relationship at Golden Road Advisors begins the same way: with a conversation. Not a pitch. We want to understand who you are and what you are trying to accomplish before we talk about anything else. And we want you to understand exactly how we work before you commit to anything.

The process has four steps.

1. Fit Call

We start with a straightforward conversation. You tell us about your situation and what you are looking for. We tell you how we work, what we believe, and what you can expect from the relationship. By the end, we both have a clear sense of whether there is a genuine fit. If there is, we move forward. If there is not, we will tell you that honestly and wish you well.

2. Discovery Questionnaire

If the fit call goes well, we send you a comprehensive questionnaire to gather the financial data we need to do serious work on your behalf. It covers your income, assets, liabilities, tax situation, insurance, estate documents, and financial goals in meaningful detail.

We will be direct: this is a substantive undertaking. We designed it that way intentionally. Clients who complete it carefully are the ones ready to engage seriously with the planning process. It also gives our team the raw material to prepare something genuinely useful for your strategy session, rather than a generic presentation built on assumptions.

3. Strategy Session

This is where the work becomes real. We sit down with you, walk through your actual financial picture, and show you specifically where you stand and where there is room to improve. That might mean addressing an underperforming investment strategy, correcting a tax execution error such as an imbalance between pre-tax and Roth contributions, identifying cash that is sitting idle when it should be working, or flagging gaps in coverage or estate planning that create unnecessary risk.

This session is complimentary. We are not running a pitch deck with hypothetical numbers. We are doing real planning with your real data, giving you a direct experience of how we work with clients. We also discuss our fees, the logistics of transferring accounts, and what the ongoing relationship looks like. You leave with enough information to make a confident decision.

4. Engagement and Onboarding

If you decide to move forward, we will send you a written summary of the strategy session along with the steps to engage the firm. Account opening and asset transfers are handled electronically. The process is straightforward, and we guide you through each step.

From there, the relationship begins in earnest. Your plan is built, your portfolio is constructed, and you have a team that knows your situation and is accountable to your outcomes.

The goal of this process is simple: by the time you become a client, there are no surprises. You know who we are, how we work, and exactly what we are going to do for you.

What Do You Receive When You Engage Golden Road advisorS?

When you engage Golden Road Advisors, you receive more than a financial plan. You get an ongoing advisory relationship with a firm that understands your complete financial picture, thinks ahead on your behalf, and maintains its obligation to your interests without qualification.

The specific deliverables include the following.

A Comprehensive Financial Plan

A thorough, written plan covering cash flow, investments, tax strategy, and estate considerations. It is built around your specific circumstances and objectives, updated as those circumstances change, and implemented by advisors who understand the reasoning behind every element.

An Evidence-Based Investment Portfolio

We believe in owning the greatest companies in the world. Index strategies are the most efficient means of doing so: they provide broad diversification, minimize costs, and preserve the tax efficiency that frequent trading erodes. Your portfolio will be aligned with your goals and time horizon. It is built to endure, not to react.

Behavioral Investment Counseling

Portfolio construction is only part of investment management. The more consequential part is helping you stay the course when circumstances make that difficult. Investors who underperform typically do so because they respond to market movements, economic news, and short-term volatility with decisions that feel prudent but prove damaging. A sound financial plan, clearly understood and regularly revisited, is the most effective protection against that pattern. We consider this counsel a central part of what we provide.

Our Fee Structure

For clients who engage us to manage their investments and provide comprehensive financial planning, we charge an annual advisory fee of 1% on assets under management. For portfolios above $5 million, the fee is 0.75%. Above $10 million, it is 0.60%.

For clients who prefer to manage their own investments and engage us solely for financial planning, we offer that service on a flat annual fee basis, beginning at $7,500. The scope and complexity of the plan determine the final fee, which is established before engagement.

Custody at Raymond James

Client assets are held in custody at Raymond James, one of the most established financial services firms in the country and a name well regarded in the Tampa Bay market. Golden Road Advisors manages those assets as your advisor, but we do not hold them. This separation between advisor and custodian is a foundational safeguard. It means that client assets are independently held, independently reported, and independently verified. It is the structural protection that prevents the kind of fraud that has occurred in arrangements where advisors control both the advice and the assets.

Proactive Tax Planning

Ongoing analysis of your tax position with a multi-year view. This includes Roth conversion analysis, capital gains management, Social Security optimization, charitable giving strategies, and coordination with your tax preparer. The objective is to reduce your lifetime tax liability, not merely to respond to each year’s filing.

Estate and Insurance Review

A careful examination of existing estate documents and insurance coverage to identify gaps or misalignments. Circumstances change, and estate plans and coverage that were appropriate at one stage of life may require revision. We ensure that what you have built is properly protected.

Consistent, Informed Access

You get ongoing access to advisors who know your situation in depth. Your inquiries are addressed by people with full context, not by staff who must first locate a file. When significant events occur in your personal life or in financial markets, you receive timely, informed counsel from someone who understands your plan.

Straightforward Counsel

We tell you what we observe, not what we think you wish to hear. When a plan is on course, we say so. When it requires adjustment, we say that as well. When a proposed course of action does not serve your interests, we say so clearly. That standard of candor is part of the service.
